How to Detangle a Wig

Remember that detangling a wig is not as easy as detangling your natural hair. That’s because wig fibers are more complicated to brush as wigs are made of naturally dry materials, unlike natural hair that has moisture making it easy to comb.

Why Wigs Tangle

Here are some of the most common reasons why wigs tangle

1. Poor quality wigs

Low-quality wigs, such as synthetic wigs are more likely to tangle than high-quality wigs made of real human hair. That’s because the fibers are from polymer or plastic. So they are prone to tangling. Additionally, over-processed human hair wigs can also tangle easily when exposed to water or high temperatures.

2. Chemical damage

Your wig can also tangle due to chemical damage. That’s because the more you treat your wigs with harmful chemicals, the higher the risk that it will tangle.

3. Dryness

The scalp generally produces natural oils. These natural oils keep your natural hair from dryness. But this isn’t the case with wigs. Since wigs do not produce their oils, they tend to dry out easily. And when they are dry, they can are prone to tangling.

4. Not taking good care of your wig

Of course, your wig is more likely to tangle if you don’t take good care of it. This is why you need to maintain it properly. You should wash it regularly with shampoo and conditioner, which is specially made for wigs. In addition to that, you need to store your wig appropriately.

5. Wear and age

No wig can last forever. The fibers can wear out. When this happens, your wig will tangle easily. So if your wig has exceeded its lifespan, don’t be surprised if you see huge tangles on it.

How To Detangle A Wig

1. Make sure you have the right tools

It is worth mentioning that not all brushes and combs are ideal for wigs. There are different types of wig brushes that can help you extend the lifespan of your wig. A wide-tooth comb is perfect for detangling wigs. You also need a wig detangling spray for tougher tangles. You can purchase a wig detangling spray in cosmetic stores or wig shops.

2. Wash your wig

You can either wash your wig in a basin or in the sink. Use warm water if your wig is very dirty. Add a little shampoo that is specially made for wigs. Warm water is ideal as it doesn’t cause damage to the hair unit. Leave your wig in the solution for about 10-15 minutes. Wash it gently and rinse with clean, cold water. After that, press the wig gently with a towel to absorb water. Stop when the unit no longer drips.

Add a few drops of conditioner to your hands and rub it thoroughly into the wig. Then rinse it using clean water. This will ensure that no traces of conditioner remains in the wig once it dries up.

Allow the wig to air dry. But if you are in a hurry, you can dry the wig using the blow dryer. But make sure you do it at low or moderate heat as too much heat can significantly damage the wig

3. Comb through the hair

Once the wig has completely dried out, it is time to com it. It is always not advisable to brush or comb the wig when it is still wet as it can damage the wig.

Starting from the bottom up, hold the section of hair you are working with and use a wide-tooth comb to comb through the wig to remove any knots or tangles. Work your way up starting from the bottom.

When combing your wig, do not pull out the section away from the piece. This may damage the wig. Comb the whole wig gently until it has no knots or tangles.

4. Style your wig

Once you have combed your hair, the next step is to style it to your liking. There are so many ways you can style your wig, but your choice will depend on your personal style and preference. You can then add some hair oil to make your wig smooth and shiny. Finish off by running your fingers gently through your wig that you have just styled.
